Anime

Two traditions, ranked by everyone else.

I watch both Chinese and Japanese animation. These are the ten best-regarded of each from my list, ordered by world rating rather than by what I would have put first.

Chinese

Donghua

Cultivation epics, mostly, and long runs — often hundreds of episodes. The rating pools here are much smaller than on the Japanese side.

On the numbers

Scores are MyAnimeList, read in September 2026. Where a search landed on a particular season or film rather than the whole run, that entry is named underneath. The vote count is shown too: a 7.92 from a few hundred people and an 8.58 from three million are not the same measurement.
